How long does Wellbutrin take to start working? Other anti-depressant drugs that effect the reuptake of neurotransmitters take considerable time to take effect. Weeks typically. I assume Bupropion is the same? I'm aware of what it does, and how it works. I'm curious to know if it takes the same amount of time as SSRI's to take effect? ladyren - You are mistaken. Wellbutrin is bupropion. >
nutsterrt replied: "About the same as the others; 2-4 weeks for most."

ladyren replied: "Welbutrin isn't Bupropion. I have known several people who have taken Welbutrin, and yes, into weeks for effective levels. And as well people on any of them and feel better within a day or so. Really, everyone is different. Some of these work for some people for awhile, and stop. It takes some real cooperation between you and your doc you tweak your dosages and cocktail if you have severe depression and if any of them stop working"

What are the long term side effects of taking Bupropion sr or Wellbutrin sr? I am taking Wellbutrin and was wondering what the long term side effects of the drug can be.

Stephen replied: "none that I'm aware of"

Paul A replied: "I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over two years, and it's working very well for me. The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can't tell I'm taking any medication at all. I've been taking it for over 2 1/2 years, and there are no problems so far with it. I doubt there should be any worry with it."

how long till you feel the effects of welbutrin? I visited a psychiatrist for the first time in my life yesterday and he gave me a prescription for bupropion. From what I understand with antidepressants, you have to take them for a couple of weeks before you feel the effects of them, because so far I don't even know I'm taking them. Is this true, or should I feel the effects immediately?

Scottie replied: "It's different for everyone, depending on your own body's chemistry. It took me two months before I starting feeling the effects of welbutrin and it is the best antidepressant that I have been on. I have been through hell trying to find the best antidepressant for me, the correct dosage, etc. (a lot of it is trial and error, what works for one person, may not work for another person and it is time-consuming as well as discouraging) and it really does take at least two months, or 6 to 8 weeks, for some people. Welbutrin is working for me and I cannot tell you what a difference it has made in my life. Hang in there - and I sincerely hope that this medication works as well for you as it has for me."

claudy_kay replied: "Anti-depressant can take up to 3 months to feel the effect."

For people who have taken bupropion for depression or to stop smoking: what side effects have you had? What types of side effects have you had, both while on the medication and while stopping it? Also, if you've stopped taking it, how long did it take you to get off of it, and how difficult was the process for you?

just_ine_credible replied: "The low doses used for smoking ceasation is easily dropped off. I took it, but was pulled off too soon. The side effects I had at first wore off after a day or so, they included; Headache, metalic taste in my mouth, slight rash, ringing in my ears and an upset stomach. But as I said, they went away fairly quickly and none were all that sevear at all. I'd go back on it in a heartbeat. Just waiting for my medical benefits to kick in with this new job..."

Chefed#1 replied: "If that is the same as Wellbutrin ,Then the side effect is I stopped smoking 8 years ago ."

Diana replied: "It added 25 pounds to me which made me even more depressed and also caused a mini stroke that hospitalized me for 2 days. Decided to get off it and go natural. Much better now"

Different side effects of Bupropion (generic) vs. Wellbutrin XL? (Thinking of switching to generic but scared)? I have been taking Wellbutrin XL for about a year and 7 months. I was on 150 mg for the first 12 months, then 300 mg for the last 7. (I love it; I feel like I couldn't have imagined a medicine that would make me feel so normal. Just... normal, and consistent, not "high" and no longer experiencing manic lows.) I have always used name brand because I could afford it and because my Dr. recommended it, and am hesitant about generics. The reason I'm hesitant is because I was on Ortho Tri Cyclen Lo (birth control) for a year or so, but the $60 copay was getting costly, so I switched to the generic... I had the worst depression I've had in 2 years, I ate literally 4 times what I eat on a normal basis, and was a psychotic mess. I would get depressed and hopeless for no real reason, every single day, and cried at least twice a day during that time. Without even really knowing why.. I was still on the Wellbutrin during that time but I may as well have been off of it. I thought I was just crazy, but then I went online and read other people's experiences with that specific birth control and learned that many other people had this bad reaction to the generic, and ended up switching back to name brand. Needless to say, I did. Anyway, so my co-pay for the Wellbutrin is $60 a month, and recently my Dr. has put me on other medications too so I want to cut costs and am thinking of switching to the generic (Bupropion)... But after a year & 1/2 of satisfaction with the name brand, added with my terrible experience with the generic of the birth control medicine vs name brand, I'm really scared to switch and wondering what other people's experiences have been? I don't want to read drug facts, because I've done significant research already, I really just want to hear what other people have experienced from the generic, or from the generic compared to name brand. I realize that I need to weigh the options between spending the extra $ and the value of my health, etc etc, I'm not looking for advice, I'm just looking for other people's side effects because that can give me an idea of how bad it may or may not be. Please help... I don't want to go through another experience like I did with my previous generic, so I could use some feedback. Thanks!

ron_8er replied: "This is a question you should discuss with your doctor. I take paxil and when I switched to the generic I started having problems. My doctor told me that some generics do not absorb as well as the brand name. With me we just increased the dosage of the generic and now I am doing very well. Talk to your doctor!"

DrGaellon replied: "The drug itself must be chemically identical to the brand. However, the FDA allows the generic to very from the brand by as much as 20% in terms of effective dose. For most drugs, 20% more or less of the medication in circulation makes very little difference, but some patients may be sensitive to such changes, and for some medications (birth control pills, Coumadin, digoxin and Dilantin in particular), it can be devastating. In general, since the drug itself is chemically identical, the side effect profile is the same - but the incidence (rate of occurrence) of side effects may be different, due to the variable absorption. If you do switch to a generic, make sure you always get the same generic from the same manufacturer - if you go from one that's 20% low to 20% high (because your pharmacy changes suppliers, for instance), you can have severe effects."

versantly replied: "there is a difference to the meds -but often undetectable to most patients. discuss this in detail with your pharmacist & doctor before changing. you may find that your body tolerates the generic form of the med better."

ladyren replied: "Drug companies get a 17 year ride for the high prices. After that, it can be made by other drug companies...But you already know that, right? Is Bupropion the generic of Welbutrin? If it is, then likely it is made by the same company that makes Welbutrin... same dog, different collar. If you are pinging around with your meds, ping with only one at a time... it's called "control". I have a good friend now of bupropion, and it is as if the sun rose in the guy's life. Before this med, he would have days and days of just sitting and doing nothing. That now does not happen. On Prozac, the usual side effect was lack of libido and ED. That as well doesn't happen with bupropion. It costs less than $17/mo I'd suggest, again, that if you are going to switch to bupropion, that that be the only drug switch you make in any single month. If you get a reaction or an effect with which you are uncomfortable, you can easily pin point the cause. Never ever ping two meds at the same time, hon, and as well, not mix any of these with very much alcohol. They just don't work, particularly since you may well be dealing with bi-polar disorder. Please understand that with any mental disorder... bipolar, depression + meds, you are just on the cusp of going back to square one. These meds are absolutely amazing, and have helped soooo many people find a level of contentment they have never ever known. So, again don't change any two drugs at the same time... not even if your doc recommends it."

How long will my course of anti depressants last? I was prescribed Bupropion sr 100mg two times a day daily in october of 2008. I the summer of 2008 I began experience panic attacks a few weeks after I experimented with Robitussin which contains the psychoactive chemical DXM which gives you altered state of consciousness. I had to quit smoking marijuana which I loved and smoked just about everyday because my anxiety was turning into a deep depression which made me not want to alter my mind anymore. Then I developed OCD which made me have violent thoughts and impulses which scared me. I've been on the same medication now for 4 months, and feel MUCH MUCH better, to the point of saying the i'm back to normal if not very close to it. My doctor wanted me to increase my dosage about a month ago, but I stayed with the 2 times a day, and a couple weeks after that the full benefits of it started to kick in. Now everyday I heal from the severe anxiety and depression. The thing is, I cant smoke weed on bupropion because of possible undesirable side effects ( please don't give me a lecture about pot, it's harmless if your responsible and smart, studys show it does not destroy brain cells what so ever, thc and the other chemicals are not carcinogens, and marijuana is NOT why i started having panic attacks, I know everything I need to know about weed.) So my question is, if i feel pretty good now, how much longer will I need to stay on bupropion, weeks, months, a year?

pharmacymom replied: "The usual course for antidepressants is a year, at least. Then if symptoms are better you might be able to slowly start coming off the meds...a doctor will have to evaluate if that is okay at the time."

Blowhole replied: "At least 4-9 months. If it's working, that doesn't necessarily mean you're back to normal (whatever that may be for you), it just means it's working. The only reason it would be sooner would be if you and your doctor decide it isn't working, or you're getting side effects from it. The 1 year metric the other answerer suggested is based on SSRI's. Buproprion is not an SSRI."

Bupropion antidepressant & smoking cessitation? Tomorrow I will begin taking Bupropion..generic for Wellbutrin. I am taking this for depression but its kind of like an added bonus when I heard that it helps you quit smoking. I wanna know how long before I start to notice the cravings starting to go away? I heard I should continue to smoke for one week and start to cut back the 2nd?? I know I have to have a strong drive to quit AND I DO!!! Also, what are the weight gain/loss side effects of this..any appetite changes? Does it decrease your sex drive very much..I am only 21 so I dont wanna lose that just yet! One more thing...has anyone had the side effect of being mean or agitated..thats also another side effect I heard about. So any tips or stories from people on this medicine will make me feel a little better. I just want to know whats gonna happen (I know it works different for everyone but I would like to know how its working for YOU) THANKS EVERYBODY!

kmax27 replied: "You should notice a decrease in cravings within 2 or 3 weeks. Wanting to quit will help you quit faster and easier. Personally I noticed weight loss and suppressed appetite and so did some of my co-workers. Didn't notice any difference in libido. And the agitation level varies person to person. It will take around 1 week for this med to be fully in your system. If you are cranky the first week just hang in there until the second week and see how you feel then. If you are still feeling anxious or agitated there are other options for smoking cessation such as Chantix."
