Is chest pain, headache and red eyes a symptom to expect with a new blood pressure med. ? Currently I am taking Micardis 80mg,Dilitiazem er 180mg,lisinopril hct 20/12.5mg and I was taking Toprol xl 200mg and just three days ago my doc took me of the toprol and started me on a new med. by the name of Coreg 12.5mg to take two times a day. With the change in med I have had bad headaches and chest pain along with red eyes and I dont know if this is somthing to be expected until the med get into my system or if it could be somekind of reaction.

jennifer s replied: "I don't think that is right and I would call him right away. Sometimes you have to try 5 different meds before you find what works for you. Headaches are a sign of high blood pressure. My husband takes Hyzar and I think he needs something else. He has been having frequent nose bleeds. Call your doctor right away or go to an ER. Chest pain should never be a side effect, if those were normal your doctor should have told you that."

gogirl replied: "I suffer from high blood pressure that is treated with medication. I had to try around 5-6 different types of meds before I found the proper one for me. If it were me, I would call the pharmacy where I got my prescription refilled, give them my symptoms, and get their advise. Or better yet, call your doctor. High blood pressure is not something I want to gamble with. Also, I invested in a home blood pressure monitor. Really glad I have it."

alyssaisthegirl replied: "No bercause when starting a new medicine all symptons ccan occur. if the symptoms stat 2 months or more call a doctor."

Need help with chest pain and back ache. Don't really want to go back to the doc.? I have been having very odd chest pains for quite a while now. They come and go and don't seem to be in one specific spot. One time, the pain is in one place, the next time another. Sometimes, I feel a shortness in breathe and back pain as well. I went to my family doctor for it and he prescribed Daypro and said it was due to inflammation. I am on Toprol XL 50 mg for blood pressure. The meds have done nothing. At times, it feels like gas and others it feels like heartburn. It seems as if I push anywhere on my chest area, there is pain. Also, I seem to stay very fatigued. As in I feel tired and sleepy from the time I wake in the morning until the time I go to bed at night. I use to think it was from working too much, but I cut that back and it still persists. Is this heart related or anything else of concern?

Ms Dani replied: "Dont take it easy, you must go & see a chest or heart specialist as early as you can to avoid a possible heart attack."

Bilguun G replied: "I do not what to say what to say about your chest pain, but for your back ache you should start wearing a sacroiliac belt (aka SI belt) around your pelvis. By providing the correct balance of resistance and resilience, the SI belt re-establishes the joint’s normal motion, relieving stress and instability at these weight bearing structures. There are many good SI Belts out there, but as far as quality, comfort, and prices are considered - Serola Sacroiliac Belt seems to be the best in the market. I'd say it was well worth my $38 investment when I was in severe back pain, which was caused by a sports injury. Visit their website for more info: Hope this info is helpful to you. Good luck bud!"

chest pain? I am 29 years old female, non-smoker, no coffee or alcohol consumer, I have had this pain on my left side, right above my breast. I saw a cardiologist, he performed a EKG and said that apart from some minor irregular heart beat, I am ok. I have had this for a while and I am taking Toprol on a regular basis. However, these symptoms (the pain) have occured recently. The doctor scheduled me for a stress test. However, I have had this pain for a few days now and I don;t know what to do. I have also calcium and magnesium deficency, chould that trigger the pain? Thanks, I dont want to go to the ER, am I just crazy??? is this a sign of a heart attack? Thanks so much..

TICH4592 replied: "Wean yourself off Toprol gradually, and not suddenly. Your Cardiologist is wrong, and whatever your problem is, will be exacerbated by taking it, in spite of what he says. -It's your life at stake, - not his. If "apart from some irregular heat beat" nothing is wrong with you, (as shown by your EKG) the chest pain you feel isn't to do with cardiac function. Lots of things can cause chest pains too. Be patient and find out what it is. It could (for instance) be muscular, or pulmonary. Lots of things. But if you keep on taking beta-blockers you will increase your chances of premature death. Please take my warning seriously. Lots of medications will not do you harm ....some may even be beneficial, -but NOT beta -blockers in your case. No, it's not a symptom of heart attack. rest assured. Oh, and you're NOT crazy! - Why should you be? You've got pains and rightly want them to be investigated and alleviated. There's nothing crazy about that. But be realistic....lots of people have pains all over the place and live to ripe old ages ...Look at me, - I'm 80! I have pains, - lots of them . And they come, and go, over the months and years. Same with My Old Lady... she's got pains too, -not the same as mine, but will she die?...Not a chance!!! She'll see me out (if the Doctors don't get her first!). Take no notice of Terry. Look at his Profile. If you had angina pectoris it would be one of the first things your EKG would have picked up and one of the first things your Cardiologist would have been looking out for. Your pains are not angina. Good luck."

Terry S replied: "Chest pain related to the heart is called angina pectoris (angina for short). It normally is felt centered behind the sternum and may radiate to the neck and.or jaw. Our heart is located only slightly left of center rather than the far left side. Angina is a sign that the heart is not getting enough oxygen to at least one part. From the Cleveland Clinic: "What are the warning signs of a heart attack? Sudden chest pain or pressure (also called angina) that worsens. This may be felt as discomfort, heaviness, or pain. May also be felt in the back, jaw, throat, arm or below the breastbone. Feeling as if a belt is being tightened around your chest Pain that spreads from the center of the chest to your arms, shoulders, neck or jaw Sweating Feeling sick to your stomach, nausea, vomiting Dizziness Shortness of breath A fullness, indigestion or choking feeling (may feel like "heartburn") Rapid or irregular heartbeats Extreme weakness, anxiety " Considering where your pain is I doubt it's your heart, but I do not rule it out. I really believe it to be a muscle or nerve issue that will clear up on it's own. I don't think you need the ER. I had angina for almost a year before I went to the doc. It took 2 - 2 ½ months to figure it out. I had 2 or 3 EKGs that were "normal". A couple of X-rays that showed nothing alarming and a CT that showed walking pneumonia but nothing with my heart. I finally saw a cardiologist that did ultrasound ans a stress test. Neither showed anything to be concerned about. But because my GP had given me Nitro to use and it did work to stop the pain the cardiologist wanted to do a catheterization. We did, they woke me after to tell me I needed 5 bypasses. They were put in that day. My point is if the test says something is wrong, it probably is. If the test says nothing is wrong, maybe it's wrong. Terry"

Karen J replied: "By any chance are you close to your menstrual cycle? I get this same thing a week or so prior to it, feels like a sharp ache at times, sometimes like a knife and when it calms it feels like a dull ache."

Chest/Back Pain linked to heart medication? For almost every day the past 2 months I've been having pretty severe back pain that somtimes runs around my rib cage and into my chest, mostly contained to the left side of my body. For the last 4 or 5 months I've been taking 100mg of TOPROL XL/day (50mg morning, 50 mg evening), to help with my tachycardia. I have no past history of back or chest problems before this. Could the medication be causing it? I've had CT scans & an MRI done both coming back normal. I saw a chiropractor for 5 straight days last week w/ limited relief. I was presricibed 500mg Viciodan and Soma w/ little help coming from these. At times the pain is unbearable, please help.

sokokl replied: "Yes, it's possible that it could be related to the medication, but also because the MRIs and CT scans are coming back normal ask your doctor about the possibility of a condition called costochondritis. Costochondritis is an inflammation of the cartillage on the ribcage. One of the symptoms that costochondritis causes is chest pain that can wrap around to the back. It can also sometimes make a person think they are having a heart attack (because of pain in the upper chest wall) but yet it's not."

What can you substitute for Toprol 25 mg in a pinch? My boyfriend ran out of this high blood pressure medicine & can not pick up his refill till Monday. He missed it yesterday, today & will not have it tomorrow. He is not feeling well (headache, breathing problems & chest pains, etc) off & on - anyone have any suggestions?

just4me replied: "You dont want to "substitue" a drug. Have him call his on call physician, its possible he may be able to get enough to make it through the weekend from the ER. Since he is having symptoms, a trip to the ER or Urgent care would be a good idea anyway."

lttleone5 replied: "Do not subsitite without doctor approval. Some pharmacies can let you "borrow" 3 pills to get you through the weekend. If symptoms do not get better, he needs to go to an Urgent Care Center. Check with your pharmacy, I know Walgreens, Safeway's, Rite-Aids and Wal-marts will usually let you borrow a few. I am assuming that he cannot pick it up till Monday because he needs doctor approval. If this is not the case, there is no excuse. Beta-Blockers, the type of medication Toprol is, relieves palpitations, which cause chest pain and shortness of breath. Ask your pharmacy."

any idea what could be wrong? i have been on toprol xl for the past month and a half...? i'm 27/female. I went to the ER 3/15 with rapid heart beat(130),chest pain, & just an overall 'strange' feeling. all tests came back negative. they thought it was either a panic attack or dehydration. I began taking 25mg of metroprolol that day b/c my blood pressure was high. After seeing my dr. for a follow up, i began taking 50mg of toprol xl everyday. since the day i started taking the toprol i've been feeling tingling all over, chest pain occasionally, nausea, fatigue, constipation, and heavy/difficulty breathing(not often). each day is different, but i get at least 1 symptom a day. i've been back to the dr. twice, he gave me xanax(alprazolam) to help b/c he felt it was anxiety. they didn't work. i've had blood tests & an echo cardiogram, all came back normal. He said what im feeling is not side effects from toprol, any ideas what it could be? at his suggestion im gonna see a neurologist. but before that im looking for any suggestions...thanks!

crazynanner replied: "i had a friend who had some similar symptoms... she actually had blood clots filling her lungs... it was caused by the combo of her birth control and her smoking... scary.. hope you are able to get a for sure diagnosis.. it's scary to not know whats going on.. happened to me just a couple months ago, but thank goodness my drs were persistant.. sounds like you are on the right track by going to a specialist.."

Heather K replied: "I've been on Toprol XL (25 mg) for almost a year now. When I first started it I had some side effects too, but nothing like you. My doctor told me not to even LOOK at the list of side effects that it has, because there's so many. Perhaps there's a different type of beta blocker they can put you on to see if it helps relieve the problem. As far as your symptoms though, they sound kinda similar to what I have. Chest pains are what brought me to the ER. I had a heart rate of 160 bpm and they couldn't figure out why it was so high. I've also had problems with breathing, but it went away after about a week. I wonder what it could be! I hope that you're able to figure it out. Good luck!"

mark f replied: "Here is a list of side effects of tropol If I were you I would contact a few pharmacists and just make sure it isn't a drug reaction. I would also if I were you trace your mind back and see if there was anything that could have caused these symptoms like did you stop a drug abruptly that you had been taking for a while? Many drugs can have withdrawal side effects. Was there any drug that you took around the time of onset of these symptoms which could explain these symptoms, perhaps a toxic reaction. I would definately seek further medical advice just to make sure there is no medical cause. Your doctor may want to do some simple blood tests like hormones, thyroid function, celiac disease (I am not a doctor so I am just firing out random tests which may not bve relevant to your symptoms). Cut out alcohol completely and caffeine and aspartame containing foods/drinks as well. Try to avoid stress. Good luck and hope you find out the cause of your problems soon."

What causes a false positive urine drug test? I went to the ER one night because I was having chest pain. They took a urine test on me and tested for drugs. The doc came in and told me it tested positive for LSD and cocaine. I have never done those in my life. I was arguing with the doctor for about 25 minutes that I have never done any drugs. So what could cause this? The only medication I'm on is Synthroid for hypothyroidism and Toprol XL for Atrial Fibrillation.

I have been experiencing mild chest pains lately located near my left pectoral muscle...? The pain is located directly around my left pectoral muscle and is closer to the far/outside of my chest. The pain is extremely mild but i feel it enough for it to be uncomfortable. I suffer from high blood pressure but I have it under control with medication (Toprol-XL 100mg tablets: 1 per day) and it is back to normal. I also have slightly high cholesterol but only by like 5 points and I have been working to get it down. I've already had an echo cardiogram done about 6 months ago (because of my unusually high blood pressure for my age) and the results were good with no detected problems. I am a 23 year old male and I am not overweight (I'm 5' - 9" and weigh 150lbs) and I am not in bad shape. Does anybody know what could be causing these pains??

spidermanjamal replied: "Heat, or anxiety those are the only 2 things left. Good luck you sound like your perfectly healthy... maybe stop smoking so much pot... 4:20 man!!!!"

Joseph I replied: "you could have a cholesteral blockage... your body can naturally produce cholesteral as well as your intake form your diet you should get it chicked out immediately. World class olypmians have dies at ages of 24-26 and appeared to be the spot of health. Hope you turn out ok."

meg g replied: "Chest pains are not to be ignored. Go to the doctor now!"

sorri replied: "First, it's always a good idea to check it out with your doctor...when in doubt. But if you've been lifting heavy items or weights you may have pulled a muscle, but check it out with your doctor."

JESSICA G replied: "I don't think you have anything to worry about. Sounds to me like you pulled a muscle, but since I'm not a doctor I would suggest you seeing yours a.s.a.p just to be sure everything is okay. Another thing is to get a second opinion if you feel your Dr. has not addressed your concerns good-luck="

ZoomZoom replied: "Pulled muscle. try heat if it works that is what the problem is. If it doesn't than if it hurts when you breathe it could be pleurisy. That is very painful and you would need to get checked by a doctor. You should anyway because chest pains are nothing to mess with so get calling."

Dilip SDIPANKAR replied: "There are several reasons for chest pain, which is often mistaken for a heart attack. In the case of a heart attack, you will find pain on pressing Acupressure Point No. 36. If there is no pain on that point, there is no cause for worry. Give treatment on the middle of the back of the left arm for 3-5 minutes. There will be no more chest pain. Regarding others problems, take Acupressure treatment on all endocrine glands twice daily including Points nos. 21,22,23, 25,26 & 28 only. After 7 days you will feel better & do this treatment up to 3 months, you will be cured from aforesaid diseases."

sokokl replied: "This could be related to a condition called costochondritis (inflammation of the cartillage around the ribcage). I would recommend having this situation evaulated by your doctor to see what they say."

How Can I Stop Taking Toprol? My doctor put me on 25 mg of Toprol/day, which I took for a month. However, I was experience feelings like the drug would wear off and my heart rate would speed up. So my dose was increased to 50 mg (25 mg twice daily). I would like to stop taking the Toprol. The last time I tried to I abruptly quit and had to start taking the medication again due to chest pain and an irregular heart beat. This time, I halved my dose for two days and now quit, but I am experiencing an irregular heart beat and tightness in my chest. When I call the doctor to ask for advice to stop taking it, they tell me not to. Is there any cardiologist out there or any doctor that could give me advice to stop taking the Toprol?

Anna E replied: "Metoprolol is a beta blocker and can cause serious heart related problems if you just stop taking it. If you are having irregular heart beat and tightness, call your doctor or go to the emergency room. The doctor would not have given you this medication if they did not think you needed it. I have been taking it for several years now for atrial fibrillation, blood pressure. Initially it was very difficult to function while taking this medication as it was very tired, but your body eventually adjust's and you can function normally. Some medications you can just stop taking, but this is not one of them. Go to a website like rxlist.com or webmd.com and do a search for Toprol or metoprolol for more information."

Drug side effect or someting more serious? I am bipolar and am effexor, ritalin, and zyprexa. I also have high blood pressure which I am taking toprol-xl for. I have been feeling extremely tired lately to the point where just getting out of bed to go tho the bathroom is a chorel Today, feeling better decided to go on a small shopping trip close to home. All of the sudden I felt myself getting very flushed and extremely lightheaded. Before I could look for a place to sit down and rest for a bit I passed out right in the middle of the store hitting my head on a garmet rack which let to quite a bruise. I was only out a few seconds before coming to, but felt absoluleyl spent after wards and was short of breath and having some chest pain but nothing real severe. I still am exhausted and having some palpitations even though this happened 7 hours ago. Should I be concerned or is this just some new side effects popping up?

versantly replied: "call your doctor NOW."

iluvtorofl replied: "Your doctor prescribes ritalin to a bipolar patient or to a patient on toprol? You need a second opinion. Toprol itself can make you feel tired and even dizzy or light-headed. I doubt it is a good idea for you to be on ritalin at all. I would suggest a second opinion. I'm glad you are ok."

pure_genius replied: "As iluvtorofl stated, you really need a second opinion. Ritalin is contraindicated for individuals with bipolar. You are very lucky that taking a stimulant, depressant and anti-psychotic together is not tearing your life apart. It certainly did to mine. I have permanent neurological damage from being on a very similar regimen. I hope you find the help you're looking for."
